The growth of the cosmetics and skincare industries has led to a heavy focus on how skincare products ‘feel’, as well as the development of active ingredients that promise incredible results. However, in our blind pursuit of cosmetic elegance, and anti-ageing actives, we may have unfortunately overlooked and possibly damaged the most important determinant of all in skin ageing, skin health and skin appearance: The skin microbiome.
Skincare can put skin under threat
Natural oils once used in skincare have fallen by the wayside and now we more commonly find oils used in skincare products that are not found in nature. The reason is simply due to marketing. The microbiome feeds on lipids in natural oils. Instantly we have removed the food source for our microbiome.
Many modern products we put on our skin are also not formulated at the right acidity level to promote the growth of a healthy microbiome. The claim of being “pH balanced”, often means very little, as the actual pH of the product is rarely given. Furthermore, many skincare products are in fact formulated at more alkaline levels that disrupt the microbiome and favour the growth of pathogenic species of bacteria.
The preservatives used in skincare can severely disrupt the skin microbiome. When a cream is manufactured, it will be expected to have an expiry date of 2 years. To preserve any water-based product for this long, excessive preservation is required. What does this preservation do to the fragile ecosystem of the skin? Irrespective of whether something is ‘organic’, ‘natural’, ‘gentle’, if it is manufactured in a “traditional” way it will damage the microbiome.
A skincare professional is responsible for providing clients and patients with skincare that is going to improve the health of their skin rather than simply focussing on how a product looks or the ‘actives’ in it.
